Andrew “Andy” Paul is the founder of Sopris Capital, a Colorado-based direct investment and incubation platform that partners with entrepreneurs to build and scale enduring businesses. Sopris employs 28 investment professionals with more than 360 years of collective experience across venture capital, private equity, and real estate, spanning a broad range of strategies, deal structures, and geographies. The firm pursues a disciplined, patient, high-conviction investment approach that has consistently delivered top-decile performance.
Sopris actively manages a global portfolio of nearly 60 companies and maintains a robust and growing investment pipeline. Its strategies include: early-stage investments in healthcare, technology services, and other tech-enabled businesses; private equity across the water, energy, and industrial sectors; real estate focused on overlooked and undercapitalized segments; and thematic investments driven by technological change, including AI, compute infrastructure, space technology, and sustainable energy. The firm emphasizes hands-on engagement and long-term value creation.
Prior to founding Sopris Capital, Andy spent 16 years at Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, where he was a senior executive, a member of the Management Committee, and co-led the firm’s healthcare investing efforts. He served as lead partner on 38 healthcare investments and sat on the boards of 11 companies that completed successful public offerings. During his tenure, the firm grew to approximately $12 billion in capital. Earlier in his career, he worked in venture capital at Hambrecht & Quist and later founded Enhanced Capital Partners and co-founded Enhanced Healthcare Partners.
Andy is deeply committed to philanthropy and community leadership. He serves on the board of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team Foundation and is Chairman of Jazz Aspen Snowmass (JAS), where he supports arts education and world-class music programming. He previously served as Chairman of the Cancer Research Institute, a Trustee of Carnegie Hall, Vice Chairman of Cornell University’s endowment, and a trustee of Lawrence Hospital. He continues his longstanding relationship with Cornell as a Trustee Emeritus.
Andy earned his B.A. from Cornell University and his MBA from Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Margaret, primarily reside in Aspen, Colorado, and have four grown children.
